What has worked for you? Well, in my case, I don't have any protection, but when I come across spammers, the reaction is to block them. That seems to be enough.
What do you do to prevent it from happening? Myself, I use very strong passwords for the admin. I think it's something all forums should do to prevent hacking, even on paid software which is stereotyped as hack-proof.
